West Sussex:

Worthing and St. Richards Hospitals: £38k funding to enable the Trust to extend the working hours of their Specialist Palliative Care Nursing Team to cover weekends and Bank Holidays for two years.

National guidance highlights that hospitals should have specialist palliative care nurses available at the weekend and bank holidays to support patients with terminal diagnoses.  Western Sussex Hospitals had secured agreement for weekend working from their staff but did not have the funds to pay for the (higher) pay costs of providing a weekend service.  We have agreed to fund this work, and the service is now available seven days/week.

St. Richards Hospital, Chichester:  Haemato-oncology Support Worker extension funding, two years £113k, approved in January, both roles recruited to.

These two Macmillan Cancer Support Workers work with the chemotherapy team at St. Richards Hospital in Chichester helping the chemotherapy nurses with straight forward procedures and providing patient education sessions.  Chemotherapy nurses are difficult to recruit, so these lower band roles release the capacity of more senior staff to deal with more complex patients.  Demand for chemotherapy has increased 20% per annum in the last few years at St. Richards, which is why we are happy to continue funding these two roles.  These support workers have done a great job in increasing the patient contact and giving patients time to discuss their concerns and any issues they may be having.

Worthing Hospital:  Macmillan information space, £35k

A Macmillan information room is being developed outside the chemotherapy waiting area, where people can come and browse information, be supported by Macmillan Volunteers , meet with Welfare Benefits advisers and have counselling sessions.  PQL  Gail Maguire has been working with the Hospital estates department to agree the designs for the room and work is due to start imminently
